Us as a family is trying to eat healthier so one of the things I do is bake whole wheat bread. Well I was getting tired of kneading bread and doing it the I guess you can say the :”old fashioned way” I really wanted a easier way to do it. So I asked for a stand mixer for Christmas but I didn’t get one. I did get a nice present though. So anyway I was decided to pull out the bread machine an try it again. I just never liked how the bread turned out in it. It just was not right. So I found the best whole wheat recipe!! Here it is

Whole Wheat Bread (for Bread machine) put everything in in the order written.

1 cup warm water

1/8 cup milk

1/3 cup honey

1 1/2 Tablespoon coconut oil (or butter)

1 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1 egg

3 cups whole wheat flour

2 teaspoons yeast

I turn mine to basic and light then let it run. It is PERFECT!!!

Have fun and enjoy some yummy bread!

  1. I use this recipe too for bread, buns, rolls, and even pizza dough but it's more of a sweet bread so for a slightly less sweet bread I only add 1/4 cup honey (makes the honey stretch further too) But puting the full amount of honey in makes really great cinnamon rolls and monkey bread. On my bread machine I had to use the whole wheat cycle (longer rising time) and the light crust selection. Normally though I just the (1 1/2 hour) dough cycle and then take it out, form it in my loaf pan (or cut out hamburger buns) and rise it (until double) then bake it for 30 minutes in my 350 degree oven.

  4. I've just made this today (and will be making another loaf shortly) and I have to say that this is the best loaf of bread I've ever made. I'm having to fend off my husband and teenage son.

My only change is that I added just under a tablespoon of vital wheat gluten.

thank you so much for sharing with us!

    1. Maybe try warming up your milk as well as your water to make sure you get that yeast nice and warm so it can activate eaiser also you could try mixing the warm water, honey and yeast in a bowl first while you put the other ingredients in and then add it last.

I sometimes have problems when it's humid out also.

  7. Your recipe is the first whole wheat bread I tried with my new bread machine and the second bread I made with it ;) It was hard to find a 100% whole wheat recipe that I could do without cow milk (I used cashew milk) or butter, my son is intolerant. Wow! It tastes heavenly good, the crust and the density are perfect. I'm so proud!!!!! Thank you!!!!

  8. I am not one to review recipes, but this one deserves it! I've been trying to find a whole-wheat bread recipe for almost a year now that produces fluffy, store-like bread, not the brick-like consistency that so many recipes yield. This one is PERFECT. Thanks so much, Jen this is going to become a staple at our house!

    1. I wonder if it could of been the temperature or humidity in your home. Try less yeast and when the temperature or humidity changes and it won't rise as well add back in the yeast. This is what I do during the summer months

  10. This is by far the best whole wheat bread I have made since getting my bread machine. I am now making my second loaf and checked on it during kneed in cycle as is usually recommended and the dough is a puddle rather than a ball. Is this how it is supposed to be? It was so good, I don't want to mess it up if not. Thanks!

    1. Hi! I love this recipe too. To be honest I am not sure what it is to look like. I have looked at it during different times and sometimes it looks a little different. Usually it turns out fine. But other times it won't and I think its because I forgot something even though I swear I didn't.

  11. Love this bread and my kids do too! Here is my secret weapon: add cinnamon and raisins; it adds just a little sweetness and makes it so, so good. I make this every other day - my teenage son can eat a loaf by himself! THANK YOU!
